HOW I MEMORISED THE QUR'AN IN 4 MONTHS

NOVEMBER 13, 2014 ~ FADHIL AZMAN

Alhamdulillah, I thank Allah for the blessings He constantly gives. I asked Allah to always ease my affairs in revising the Qur’an & give me the means to share with and inspire others(?)

I’d like to make it clear that I have memorised around 9 juzu’ in all the years in my primary school, secondary & pre-uni. So it was kind of memorising 20 plus new juzu’ and revising back the other 9 during these 4 months. I am also not having any commitments other than birrul walidain(doing good to parents) hehe. But by Allah, those who have the intention and desire to memorise the Qur’an for Allah, He will make it easy for you insyaAllah. This is, from my experience.

Below are my tips ;

1- Purify your intentions.

This is the utmost important point that one should always be mindful of, do it sincerely for the sake of Allah. Hoping for His mercy, obtaining His pleasure & attain Jannah(paradise). Not for the sake of exams, friends, families or showing off(riya’) wal iyyahu min zalik, we seek refuge from Allah from it.

“Allah only accepts actions that are intended purely for His pleasure.”(an-Nisa’i) May Allah keep our intentions purely for Him.

2- Start, now.

No, don’t procrastinate. Your intention won’t be any stronger a month from now. Make time for yourself. Don’t make excuse for yourself. I know some people, who have the intention, but doesn’t have the motivation. To me, therein lies the source of motivation: think of the benefits – you’ll gain so much – the rewards for reciting every huruf(letters), beautiful beautiful verses & stories you’ll come across(!!!). Take your Qur’an after your solah. InsyaAllah you’ll get the momentum from there on.

3- Use the same mushaf.

I had used the same mushaf(book ; Qur’an) since 14. This is the advice that usually my asatizah(teachers) gave, reason is, when you use the same mushaf, your eyes are accustomed to the way it’s written in the book, colours, decorations etc, thus makes the mind accustomed to it insyaAllah.

4- Listen to the Qur’an recitations.

This may be hard, but may Allah make it easy for you ; let go your songs, music, pop, rock. Two opposites cannot coexist with each other. Of course, there are different opinions on this matter. But would you rather listen to music than listening the Qur’an recitation that is said to calm and soothes one’s heart? (13:28)

• I would listen to the Qur’an recitation of the surah that i am currently memorising or the next surah, repeating it while doing my stuff. The words will enter your mind subconsciously. You will find memorising the surah (chapter) easier insyaAllah. I would also open my mushaf and listen to the Qur’an recitation of the surah to get used to the pages – then begin memorising.

5- Repetition and division of page are foundations to memorising.

Read the whole page a few times, you can choose to divide the page into three or two parts. This depends on how easy and manageable you find the page is. Memorise the first part before proceeding on to the next part. Avoid going to the next part before first ensuring that you’ve gotten the first part stored in your memory, strong and intact.

6- Understanding is key to memorising.

It gives you pleasure understanding what He is conveying. By Allah, I find the Qur’an very beautiful, it can get you to your lowest point and open you to the greatest change. Focus on what you are reading to understand the verse. Not thinking about other stuff whilst repeatedly reading it.

Download a translation/tafseer app of the Qur’an in your phone. Or some may use the mushaf that has translation at the side. My ustazah(may Allah give her goodness) always advice us that understanding is half answering the question. So in this context, understanding is half memorising the verse insyaAllah.

7- Start slow.

Take small steps one at a time, insyaAllah you’ll find being consistent easier.

8- Don’t give up.

Doesn’t mean it seems hard to you right now, it will remain hard tomorrow, make your du’a before begin your hifz(memorisation) Remember that where you are now(in memorising), is a step closer to finish the Qur’an, don’t stop. Just keep moving. (This applies to everything else as well in whatever you’re pursuing/doing insyaAllah)

9- Have a friend that wants to memorise the Qur’an too.

It helps to keep each other motivated by sharing how much you have memorized and revised.

10- Make a plan.

So basically, mine was, memorising 4-6 pages in a day. Memorising a page took me around 30mins+/-. It depends on the difficulty of the page. Some pages, Allah made it easy for me alhamdulillah. So it took me around 20mins to memorised it. There were quite a number of pages that has verses that i’ve learned/memorised in school and that itself made it easy for me. Subjects like fiqh(Islamic law), Aqeedah(islamic belief) and so on. Whereas pages that were difficult took me around 45mins.

11- The best time,

to memorise Qur’an is after subh or fajr prayer when the mind is fresh. Something about fajr feels easy to enter your mind. The serenity of fajr. My ustazs(may Allah give them goodness) constantly advise us to be productive in the morning, as illustrated by the prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم in a hadeeth “O Allaah, bless my ummah in the mornings.” (by Abu Dawood, al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Maajah)

After prayer times is always best to do your hifz(memorisation). The period between maghrib and isya’ is nice, fill up the time making by memorising.

12- Be productive.

Read the Qur’an on your way to school/work etc in the train/bus. Personally, most of the time, i like taking the train more than driving, as the journey time can be spent being productive, hifz or revising.

13- Carry your mushaf wherever you go.

It will set as a reminder to read it insyaAllah.

14- Take care of your eyes.

…. From gazing, staring at the opposite gender’s ‘aurah(parts of men/women’s body that should be covered). Your ears from listening to gossip. Your mouth from backbiting, saying things that may create fitan (falsehood) and from all acts that are forbidden. Again my ustazah(may Allah reward her) advise us, and asked to memorise Imam Syafi’ie ‘s poem(in arabic) in our heart to set as a reminder.

I complained to Wakii’(Imam Syafi’ie ‘s teacher) about my poor memory
He advised me to abstain from sinful acts
And he told me that knowledge is light
And the light of Allah will not be a guidance for a sinner

“A man asked Maalik ibn Anas, ‘O Abu ‘Abd-Allaah! Is there anything that will improve my memory?’ He said, ‘If anything will improve it, it is giving up sin.”

15- Make tawbah.

Seek forgiveness always, sometimes we commit a sin without even being conscious of it. Should one fell, one should hasten in repenting to Allah. He accepts the repentance to those who sincerely repents insyaAllah.

• “And, indeed, I, (Allah) am most certainly forgiving to he who repents and believes and does good deeds and is, then, rightly guided.” (20:82) (وَإِنِّى لَغَفَّارٌ لِّمَن تَابَ وَءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَٰلِحًا ثُمَّ ٱهْتَدَىٰ)

16- Have someone to listen to your memorisation ; tasmii’.

Have a friend, family member or a teacher to make your tasmii’ to. This person should be someone who knows how to recite Qur’an properly, so that he/she can catch your small mistakes that often happens.

17- Muraja’ah (revising) what you have memorised.

Have someone to listen to your muraja’ah(revision). One should hold onto his hifz by revising it constantly.

“Commit yourselves to the Qur’an, by the one in Whose Hand is my soul, it is faster in slipping away than a tied camel.“ (Agreed upon)

We are after all Insaan(humans) It is human nature to be forgetful, as the Arab poet said “He is only called insaan because of his forgetfulness (nasiyaan), and it is only called the heart (al-qalb) because it changes so rapidly (yataqallib).”

18- Eat raisins & honey.

Not quite sure about the details, but i’ve been taught it helps to improve your memory insyaAllah.

19- Make night prayer.

Make at least two raka’ah. Just start with two raka’ah prayer and make du’a. It will help insyaAllah.

In a beautiful hadeeth the prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said “Our Lord descends every night to the Earth’s sky when the last third of the night begins. He says: “Is there any supplicant for Me to answer them? Is there any seeker of My Favor so that I will give them? Is there any seeker of forgiveness so that I will forgive them?” (agreed upon)

“The du’a made at tahajjud is like an arrow which does not miss its target” – Imam Syafi’ie

20- Du’a. Always, seek for Allah’s help.

Don’t underestimate the power of du’a. It’s amazing to see how great du’a really is.

The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said; “Verily your Lord is Generous and Shy. If His servant raises his hands to Him (in supplication) He becomes shy to return them empty.”(Ahmad, Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi)

• Call unto Me, I will answer you. (40:60) ( ۚ وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدْعُونِىٓ أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ)

• I answer the supplicant when he calls upon Me (2:186) (أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ ٱلدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ)

Know that there is nothing more dearer to Allah than a servant making du’a to Him.(Tirmidhi) So ask Allah to make your mind and heart easy for you to memorise His words. Ask Him to strengthen your memory to remember and not to forget what you have memorised, some people have difficulties in memorsing, they find it hard to remember and forget easily, ask Allah to strengthen it. Ask Allah to remove your laziness.

21- Make du’a for others.

During the times you are making du’a for yourself, include others in your du’a as well, for, they might in need of Allah’s blessings. Anyway, you might also benefit from it.

“The dua of a Muslim for his brother (in Islam) in his absence is readily accepted, an angel is appointed to his side, whenever he makes a beneficial dua for his brother the appointed angel says “aameen and may you also be blessed with the same.”(Muslim)

22- Ask your parents to make du’a for you.

When I started memorising the Qur’an in the first month, I told my mum my intention & asked my parents to make du’a for me. It helps a lot.

“The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said; Three supplications will not be rejected by Allah, the supplication of the parent for his child, one who is fasting & the traveler.” (al-Bayhaqi, at-Tirmidhi)

That’s all, i hope it helps/benefits in any way even if it’s a little. I still have a lot of muraja’ah to do. Please make du’a for me. May Allah make it easy for you in memorising/revising the Qur’an. May Allah ease our affairs.

Special thanks to my friends for supporting!
